When working with adolescents and teens, I like to use an integrative approach to therapy that includes aspects of several cognitive behavioral therapies, art therapy, mindfulness, solution focused techniques and role playing to accomplish the following:
- Create a safe space for teens to openly express themselves
- Teach coping skills to help deal with difficult situations
- Learn problem-solving skills to avoid conflict and difficult situations
- Empower teens to feel more confident and in control of their emotions and behavior
- Enhance skills to develop and maintain social relationships
- Provide ways to reduce anxiety, stress, depression, hopelessness, or self-doubt
- Guide teens in learning how to manage anger or control impulsive behavior
- Work with teens to learn how to cope with traumatic events such as death of a loved one or physical/sexual abuse
- Help teens learn to express themselves appropriately and to improve communication
- Help teens to love themselves

- Learn and practice self-care and stress-reducing techniques
- Shift from a reactive parenting approach to one that is based on respect and empathy
- Establish and communicate realistic and developmentally-appropriate expectations, choices, and limits
